Dr David Fortin VOIR LA VIDÉO
Dr. David Fortin states that to keep the brain active and alert, one must first take care of overall health.
This book explores the brain from a preventive perspective, emphasizing the preservation and protection of this vital organ.
After presenting its anatomy and distinguishing a healthy brain from a diseased one, the author explains how to reduce the risks of brain diseases and cognitive decline. He discusses various factors: the vascular system, diet, sleep, environmental influences, social life, and intellectual engagement. He disentangles fact from fiction regarding brain health and reminds us, as a neurosurgeon, that simply reading this guide—like any reading—already helps stimulate the brain.

The more we learn about the brain, the more we realize how limited our knowledge is. Although it is sometimes possible to provide clear and confident answers, we will see that many of our reflections will find resolution in a more philosophical approach, grounded in cautious skepticism. At times fascinating, often mysterious, and sometimes elusive, it is the organ of all enigmas and never ceases to surprise us. This is the story that will be told here.

This book is both an exploration of the brain and the story of a doctor whose passion for it and the lessons taught by his patients have shaped his practice and his humanity. The nine chapters correspond to eight stages of life: naivety (childhood), carefreeness (adolescence), fervor (young adulthood), the onset of doubt (early career), hard work, peak achievement, wisdom, and decline. The final chapter is a meditation on the culmination of the aging process: death.

It is said that there are as many neural connections in the human brain as there are stars in our galaxy. It is therefore not surprising that its functioning and structure remain partly obscure. Nevertheless, advances in this field have accelerated thanks to new technologies in brain imaging and physiology. This book offers a simplified summary of the most recent knowledge on the subject, along with a philosophical reflection on the nature of consciousness, the promises of artificial intelligence, and the influence of new technologies on the brain.
